What are Changing Places and Why are they so Important?

What are Changing Places and Why are they so Important?

In 2005 'The Changing Places Consortium' was established. Acting as a group of organisations working to support the rights of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and/or other physical disabilities, the Consortium campaigned for Changing Places to be available in all large public spaces.

The limited mobility experienced by thousands of individuals with profound and multiple disabilities across the UK is not being catered for by standard accessible toilets. Failure to provide the right environments for individuals who are unable to stand unaided has led to many incidents of individuals being forced to use the floor of disabled facilities to change in public places.

Disabled toilets do not require the provision of changing benches, or hoists. Alongside this, there is often too little room to accommodate more than 1 person. Changing places toilets alleviate the risk experienced by some individuals when using disabled toilets, where in some instances families have been forced to risk their own health and safety by changing their loved one on a toilet floor. Which suffice to say is dangerous, unhygienic and undignified.

Numbers of these facilities is increasing, but overall the provision does simply not satisfy the demands. To find out more about which individuals need Changing Places facilities please CLICK HERE.

What Size should a Changing Places Facility be?

Whilst there are no strict Governmental standards, the Changing Places Campaign has developed it’s own professional standards. It is recommended that the...

Dimensions of the room are a minimum of 12 square metres (3m x 4m), with a ceiling height of 2.4m.

It is appreciated that your space may be smaller than the 12 square metres as stated, and as such Changing Places are happy to advise on how best to construct the space.

Changing Places toilets are where the minimum room dimensions are 7 square metres or above.
