Metal Coat Hooks FAQ

How to put up a coat hook

Before you fix your metal coat hooks to doors or walls, you should consider the amount of space you have to work with and the most appropriate location for them based on intended use.

If you do not have experience in installation projects or have not used a drill before, we advise you seek a professional to carry out the work in order to avoid damage or getting hurt.

Here’s how to put up a coat hook:

  1. If you’re installing your metal coat hooks into a wall that already has studs, it’s a good idea to fit your metal coat hooks onto these as they can add extra support which is particularly useful for heavier items. You can use a stud finder to find these behind your wall and apply masking tape (or use a pencil) to mark out their positions.

If you are installing your metal coat hooks onto a door or cannot locate any studs behind your wall, you can use hollow wall anchors (marking out where you wish to put up your metal coat hooks).

  1. Ensure that your metal coat hooks are equally spaced.

  1. Using either a pencil or masking tape, mark the centre of where you wish to install your metal coat hook (you can use a spirit level to make sure that it is in line) and mark screw holes.

  1. Using a drill, drill through these screw holes - be very careful not to drill too far, especially if you are drilling through a door as you don’t want to make a hole through to the other side!

  1. Attach the metal coat hooks and you are finished!

Alternatively, you can also find metal coat hooks on an adhesive plate which will not require any drilling and is very easy to put up. However, you must bear in mind that these may not be suitable for heavy items or high traffic areas.

How high to hang coat hooks

How high you need to hang your metal coat hooks will depend on who they are intended to be used by. That said, metal coat hooks are typically located around 60 inches above the ground but for schools with young students and disabled facilities, your metal coat hooks should be hung lower to ensure that they are within reach.

It is important not to hang your metal coat hooks too high as they will be difficult to use and it is also important for you not to hang your coat hooks too low, as this may mean clothes and belongings drag on the floor.

Where to put coat hooks

Where you decide to put your metal coat hooks will depend on the amount of space you have available and the type of room you are installing them in.Typically, coat hooks are placed on the back of cubicle doors or on walls at an accessible height.

If you are looking to put metal coat hooks in a changing room, it is also common to put coat hooks above the benches where people change as it is a more convenient location to keep belongings off of the floor and dry.

  • What finish will suit your washroom or other commercial setting best?
