They are available as back-to-wall, close-coupled, or low-level variants. All have the same common feature: the toilet height (typically 450mm) is higher than a standard toilet pan, allowing a person with disabilities to move more easily from a wheelchair onto the toilet. Disabled toilet pans are available in the following variants:

Back-to-Wall Disabled Toilets:

The toilet pan is installed with its back against a wall or an IPS unit, and the toilet cistern is concealed within the service void behind it. This means that only the toilet and seat are visible.

Close-Coupled Disabled Toilets:

Perhaps the most popular type of disabled toilet. The ceramic cistern is designed to pair with the toilet pan and sits on top of the rear of the pan. This type of disabled toilet offers easy access for maintenance and is often the cheapest solution because no additional IPS units are required.

Low-Level Disabled Toilets:

The toilet cistern is hung on the wall separately from the toilet pan and connected via a flush pipe. The cistern and disabled toilet are both visible. One of the main advantages of this toilet type is that the toilet pan can be installed at varying distances from the wall to suit the position of the waste outlet.

Wall-Hung Disabled Toilets:

Wall-hung toilets are similar to a back-to-wall toilet in that the cistern is concealed behind a service void. The toilet height is determined by the installer, who will mount the pan with a rim height greater than 450mm.

No, disabled toilets don’t usually have lids to make the toilet more easily accessible. Interestingly, a disabled toilet can be supplied with retaining buffers that stabilise the toilet seat when a person is manoeuvring themselves from a wheelchair to the toilet.

The average height of a disabled toilet is around 450mm. A disabled toilet is higher than standard Commercial Toilets as this allows users to get on and off more easily.
