Case Study: St. Clements, Bournemouth School Toilet Refurbishment

Case Study: St. Clements, Bournemouth School Toilet Refurbishment

We were invited to carry out refurbishment works to a set of children's washrooms at St. Clements School in Bournemouth. The existing toilets in this historic building needed an update, with the school seeking to make them easier to clean, more durable, and benefit from enhanced hygiene features throughout. They chose our School Toilet Refurbishment service, which included complete project management.

The first stage of the works involved removing the existing washrooms and stripping them back to the bare structure. To smarten up the rooms, we sealed off some old window openings and installed a new suspended ceiling, which was positioned at a lower height than the previous one. This not only made the room feel more inviting but was brought in beneath the heating loop, so all pipework and services were concealed behind it.

This new ceiling also housed low-energy LED lighting, which was controlled by infrared sensors. This means that the lights are only activated when a student is in the room and switch off automatically.

Altro Walkway Anti-Slip Vinyl Safety Flooring was installed underfoot, while Altro Whiterock was used to clad the wall surfaces. White Whiterock was selected due to its powerful hygiene and fire ratings as well as its extensive warranties. This material reduces the number of join lines in a room and facilitates easy cleaning functionality.

Integrated Plumbing Systems (IPS) created a narrow service void behind the toilets where mains water, waste pipes and cisterns can be concealed. This protects them from accidental damage and tampering, while also significantly reducing exposed surfaces in the washroom and making them much easier to clean.

Ultra Cubicles were installed using solid-grade laminate, a material that’s completely impervious to water, so it will never swell or weaken from ingress of water.

Meanwhile, Solid Surface Wash Troughs were installed for hand washing, paired with Inta Non-Concussive Taps. These taps only emit water for a set period once activated, eliminating the risk of being accidentally left running.

St Clement's School was looking for a fresher, smarter new washroom, and we were able to deliver that with easy-clean functionality, highly durable finishes, and an engaging design that not only makes the facilities more engaging but also works to promote strong personal hygiene habits.

The washroom renovation works were started and completed during the 2021 school summer holidays. Finished on time and to budget, they have been met with enthusiasm from both the pupils, parents and faculty.

Modern Advances in School Toilet Blocks to Mitigate Antisocial Behaviour

School toilet blocks were always forbidding places – a haunt of bullies with the waft of cigarette smoke, and more recently, a place where Mobile Phone Cameras are feared.

That has changed dramatically in recent years, and School toilet blocks are now designed to prevent Antisocial Behaviour, save water, and discourage people from using the area as a hangout.
