Bournemouth School For Girls - Faculty Toilet Refurbishment: Case Study

The faculty toilets at Bournemouth School for Girls in Dorset needed upgrading, and the school took the opportunity to introduce a design-led Washroom that included a shower cubicle area in the Female Wash Space.

The client had a clear idea and design of what they wanted to achieve, which we refined into CAD drawings and a detailed specification, providing them with an accurate breakdown of costs, materials, and timeframes. 

The project took place over the school summer holidays of 2025, allowing us to carry out the works to the Male and Female staff School Washroom Refurbishment without any disruption to school operations.

After removing the existing washroom fixtures, we laid Altro Wood flooring, a vinyl that laps up the wall to create a watertight seal across the floor. Meanwhile, on the walls, an Altro Whiterock cladding was selected. This wall covering has a high fire rating and is one of the most hygienic materials used in commercial washrooms, as it can be easily wiped down and sanitised. The Whiterock was finished with the Urban Mineral finish, which provides a mottled, polished concrete appearance, and we used Nickel trim to help accentuate the design.

The Whiterock was also used to clad pipe boxes alongside a changing bench in the female washroom. 

The shower enclosure was created using solid-grade laminate panels from our Stature SGL Full Height Toilet Cubicles range, which created a small room where we installed a shower tray and a glass enclosure. We installed a Triton Aspirante Electric Shower to avoid the need for a mains hot water feed, and retained some changing space within the shower cubicle. 

The toilet cubicles themselves were floor-to-ceiling solid-grade laminate cubicle panels in a wood-grain effect. These large-format cubicles provide users with added privacy and also make the room feel more solid, with reduced echo in the space. This material is also completely impervious to water, meaning it will never swell or weaken due to the ingress of moisture.

Full-height duct sets were used to create a thin cavity behind the toilets themselves, a service void where we can house and conceal the cisterns, waste, and mains pipework. 

In the Men's Staff Toilets, RAK Origin back-to-wall toilets were then fitted and connected to a push-button flush in the wall panel. In the men's room, RAK Series 600 urinals with concealed traps were installed with ceiling-mounted sensor flush activation from Dart Valley Systems. 

A new suspended ceiling was installed, housing a PIR controlled lighting system with low-energy LED lighting. The hand wash areas were created using a Corian Wash Trough, which was mounted on solid-grade laminate underframes and paired with Hansgrohe BauEdge Single Lever Basin Mixer Taps. 

On top of the School Washroom Products already mentioned, we also added a designer anthracite radiator, selected by the client, and installed extra ventilation through an external wall, which helps manage moisture and odours within the new rooms.

These stylish washrooms at Bournemouth School For Girls set the benchmark when it comes to utilising small washroom space and leading with design. The School Washroom Refurbishments were completed on budget and on time, and have been well received by staff across the site.
