Sluice Sinks and Slop Hoppers for UK Hospitals

We sell stainless steel sluice sinks and slop hopper troughs for use in hospitals and other healthcare settings. They fully comply with UK NHS regulations, including HBN 00-10 and HTM64. These sinks are sold either as a standalone unit or with the necessary sanitaryware parts, including cisterns, flush pipes, taps and waste fittings.

Slop hoppers are available in sizes ranging from 600mm wide to 1600mm. Many are available in left- or right-handed configurations to suit most room layouts. Bespoke options are also available and manufactured in the UK (lead times apply).

Made from high-grade stainless steel, our range of slop hoppers and sluice sinks can be purchased with the necessary parts to make them fully functional. We offer a choice of cisterns, taps and support legs.

Our range has been carefully selected from leading manufacturers such as Armitage Shanks, Delabie, Pland and KWC. Choose from top or back-inlet options. The top inlet requires an exposed cistern, whereas the back inlet versions will have a concealed cistern installed behind an IPS panel or a plumbing service void.

All medical sinks and troughs are individually priced on the Commercial Washrooms website. For further advice or a bespoke quote, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our trained sales team.

Sluice Sinks and Slop Hoppers FAQs

What is a sluice sink?

A sluice sink is a hospital or medical unit used to dispose of body waste, such as vomit, blood, faeces, and urine, and is often called a slop hopper.

They are found in clinical areas such as surgical units and operating theatres. Much like a toilet, they have a 100mm outlet to allow for both solid and liquid waste. A cistern installed above or behind the unit will flush water down the sink, which in turn cleans the integral bowl.

Sluice sinks can be a single disposing bowl or include an adjacent sink used by medical staff to clean their hands.

What is the difference between DUH and DUHS?

DU stands for disposal unit. There are four models of slop hopers, and they generally include the following:

  1. DU: This is the smallest unit and typically measures 600mm wide by 600mm deep. This type is wall-mounted but can include support legs.
  2. DUH: This is a larger unit, typically 1000mm wide and 600mm deep. It differs from the DU because it includes a left- or right-handed drainer (the left- or right-handed orientation is determined by the position of the slop hopper bowl).
  3. DUHS: This is the largest of the slop hopper units and is also wall-hung. In addition to the drainer, the unit includes a hand-wash sink as an integral part.
  4. DUFS: These are floor-standing units that typically include only the flushing bowl, with no handwashing or drainer. They are a good option when space is limited or a wall-hung unit is not feasible.

Do I need a left or right-handed slop hopper?

The handing refers to the position of the sluice bowl compared to the drainer and hand-wash sink (if included). A right-handed slop hopper will consist of the drainer on the left and the bowl on the right. A left-handed slop hopper will consist of the drainer on the right and the bowl on the left.
