Gravesend Grammar School Toilet Refurbishment - Case Study

This busy secondary Grammar school in Gravesend approached Commercial Washrooms to refurbish some tired toilet facilities. After an initial consultation, we drew a specification with the client that would offer a clean, modern aesthetic with high durability credentials and an easy-clean design.

The works were carefully scheduled to take place during school holidays so as not to cause disruption during term time. The washroom was stripped back to a bare shell before the installation process began. Before this could take place though, a new manhole cover was fitted that would accommodate vinyl flooring. For this, the client selected Altro Walkway, a highly durable safety flooring that has powerful anti-slip properties. The walls were clad in Altro Whiterock, an extremely hygienic material that is easy to keep clean and sanitise, while a new suspended ceiling was also installed.

LED lighting was fitted within this new ceiling for economic energy usage, paired with a PIR lighting sensor so that the lights are only activated when someone is in the room. Solid grade laminate (SGL) was used for all the DUCT sets and cubicles, a material that is completely impervious to water. This means it will never swell or weaken from ingress water and remains one of the most durable options in the commercial washroom environment.

Armitage Shanks back to wall toilets were fitted within the cubicles, while concealed trap urinals were installed alongside DVS Flushmatic flush sensors. This meant that the urinals flush only when used, rather than being on a timer, which can deliver substantial savings in water consumption.

As well as new hand dryers, the washroom was finished off with the Education model solid surface wash trough and wall-mounted push-button taps from Delabie. These taps also delivered savings on water consumption as they only emit water for a set period. This delivers controlled water flow, but also protects against taps accidentally being left on.

The washroom at Gravesend Grammar School in Kent was completed on budget and on time, leaving the premises with high quality facilities that boast impressive durability and benefitting from an easy clean design. The washroom was further protected by long warranties from Altro for both flooring and wall surfaces, making it a school washroom that will stand the test of time, lasting long into the future.
