Undercounter wash basins (also known as undermount basins) are installed beneath a vanity top in a commercial washroom. The top is cut to the same profile as the bowl top, and the wash basin is attached to the underside of the countertop with a chemical or mechanical bond. Undercounter basins are popular in both domestic bathrooms and commercial washrooms for their sleek, contemporary appearance and minimalist design. They’re also very easy to clean thanks to their lack of raised lips, making cleaning and maintaining commercial washrooms quicker. Under-counter basins are attached to the worktop surface from the underside of the top and so are not supplied with tap holes, but they are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to create a truly unique washroom design. An alternative to an under-counter wash basin, should you not wish to cut your worktop, would be a lay-on basin, which sits on top of the worktop and requires only holes to be drilled for the waste and taps.

What is an undercounter basin?
An undercounter basin (also known as an under-mount basin or under-slung basin) is typically fitted under a countertop and attached to a worktop’s surface from beneath. They are popular for their contemporary style and practicality as they’re very easy to clean.

How to fit an undercounter basin
Please note that it is recommended that you hire a professional to fit an under-counter basin to ensure it is installed correctly.
- First, you’ll need to measure your new under-counter basin. If you’re replacing a basin, measure the hole in the countertop to determine the basin size you’ll require or take measurements of your old basin if you still have it.
- Determine where you’d like to install your basin if it’s moving to a different countertop (you must also consider where your water supply is).
- Decide which reveal style you’d prefer (how much of the basin’s rim is visible). “Zero reveal” is popular because it's easy to clean and has a contemporary look.
- Trace the outline of your under-counter basin - your basin may come with a template which you can trace around, or you can turn the basin over and trace around it on the countertop.
- Use a jigsaw or a circular saw to cut into the countertop following your trace - please make sure you wear the appropriate safety gear for this (i.e goggles to protect your eyes and a dust mask to prevent you from breathing in dust). Wipe the countertop clean when you are finished.
- Place something that can support the basin under the countertop - some people stack wood boards for this step.
- Place the basin in the centre of the hole in the countertop, and clamp it for support as you fit it into position.
- Install studs to the underside of the countertop and caulk around the basin to secure it. Once this is complete, you can tighten the clamps to raise the basin and install basin clips and wingnuts over the studs.
- Clean the area and mount your taps, connecting them to the water supply.
