Understanding the Difference: Standard Filtration, Ultrafiltration, and Reverse Osmosis
Choosing the right water filtration system starts with understanding how each type works. While all three improve water quality, they remove different types of contaminants and provide different levels of protection.
Standard Filtration
Standard filtration is designed to remove larger, more common impurities from water. This can include chlorine, sediment, sand, rust, dirt, silt, and other visible particles that affect water clarity. Carbon-based filters can also help reduce unpleasant tastes, odours, and some volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Depending on the filter media, some systems may also reduce trace levels of metals such as copper or lead.
Ultrafiltration (UF)
Ultrafiltration uses a hollow-fibre membrane with microscopic pores to remove contaminants much smaller than those removed by standard filtration. It can reduce bacteria, cysts, parasites, microplastics, suspended solids, turbidity, and fine particulate matter. UF is an excellent option where biological protection and particle removal are important, while still allowing beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium to remain in the water.
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Reverse osmosis offers the highest level of filtration by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. It removes many dissolved contaminants that other systems cannot, including lead, copper, sodium, nitrates, fluoride, arsenic, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), and many dissolved salts. RO systems also remove microplastics, bacteria, viruses, and fine particles, producing highly purified water ideal for drinking, cooking, and use in premium appliances.
Which Option Is Right for You?
- Standard Filtration – Best for improving taste, odour, and removing sediment such as sand, rust, dirt, and chlorine.
- Ultrafiltration – Best for reducing bacteria, cysts, microplastics, and fine particles while retaining healthy minerals.
- Reverse Osmosis – Best for maximum purification and removing dissolved contaminants such as PFAS, lead, copper ions, nitrates, fluoride, and salts.
The right choice depends on your incoming water quality, desired level of purification, and how you plan to use the water.
