St Katharine’s CE Primary School, Bournemouth - Case Study

St Katharine’s CE Primary School, based in Bournemouth, required a complete pupil washroom refurbishment to replace facilities that had become outdated and damaged.

The existing toilets had suffered water damage from a leak, leaving the flooring compromised and causing odour problems where urine was seeping into gaps around the boys’ urinals. The washrooms looked tired and the sanitaryware was not ideally suited to younger pupils.

The school appointed Commercial Washrooms to deliver a full washroom refurbishment that would eliminate hygiene issues, introduce child-friendly fixtures, and create a fresh, modern environment.

To avoid disruption during term time, work was carefully scheduled and completed during the summer holidays while the school was closed.

To provide durability and longevity in a school setting, we installed Ultra Plus SGL toilet cubicles, a high-abuse range made from Solid Grade Laminate with stainless steel hardware to resist wear and moisture.

Five RAK Junior school-height back to wall toilets were fitted, offering child-sized pans that are comfortable, accessible, and designed for primary-aged pupils.

In the boys’ washroom, RAK Jazira urinals were installed at a suitable height, complete with concealed cisterns and a sensor flush system to promote hygiene and reduce water consumption.

To modernise the hand-washing area, two solid surface box wash troughs with underframes were introduced. These durable wash troughs offer easy-clean surfaces and conceal pipework neatly away from little hands.

Each wash trough was paired with Inta non-concussive push taps, which automatically shut off after use to conserve water and prevent taps from being left running.

To complete the setup, Fast Dry hand dryers were installed, providing pupils with a quick and hygienic way to dry their hands while reducing reliance on paper towels.

Behind the fixtures, SGL full-height duct panel sets were installed to conceal pipework and allow easy access for maintenance.

The walls were lined with Altro Whiterock Vantage hygienic wall cladding, providing a seamless, impact-resistant finish that is simple to clean and helps maintain high standards of hygiene.

The damaged floor was replaced with safety vinyl flooring, which is fully sealed and coved up the create a watertight layer.

Finally, a suspended ceiling system with integrated LED lighting and ventilation was fitted, brightening the washrooms and improving airflow. PIR sensors trigger the lights to activate when a user is detected in the room which can deliver substantial economic savings.
