Anti-ligature coat hooks FAQs

What does anti-ligature mean?

If something is classed as ‘anti-ligature', it means that it is designed in such a way that prevents users from being able to attach a ligature (such as rope) to a fixed point. Anti-ligature products are ideal for washroom environments where users may be a threat to themselves or others, such as in prisons or mental health settings.

Where to hang coat hooks

Coat hooks should be hung in convenient locations. Common places to hang anti-ligature coat hooks include: above changing room benches, fixed to the back of doors, inside changing cubicles, on the wall and by entrances in cloakrooms.

What height should coat hooks be?

The standard height for coat hooks to be hung is approximately 60 inches high. For accessible areas, coat hooks should be hung lower at around 44 inches high so that users can easily reach them.

What are the benefits of anti-ligature coat hooks?

There are many reasons why you should consider installing anti-ligature washroom furniture and accessories such as anti-ligature coat hooks in your facilities, including:

  • They help to minimise the risk of self-harm, suicide and can protect others - this is one of the most important reasons to invest in anti-ligature products as it helps to keep people safe. Without fixing points to attach ligatures, it makes it more difficult for users to cause harm to themselves or others.

  • Anti-ligature coat hooks are more robust and durable so they can better resist abuse.

  • They can be more cost-effective - as a result of them being more vandal-resistant, they can stand the test of time, saving on repair and replacement costs.

  • They're easy to maintain - anti-ligature coat hooks are easy to clean and maintain, helping to keep washrooms hygienic and inviting.

  • They are suitable for a variety of washroom environments. From hospitals and healthcare settings to schools and prisons, anti-ligature coat hooks are perfect for use in a range of sectors.

What are some common features of anti-ligature products?

  • Minimal gaps on joints

  • Minimal gaps between the coat hooks and the wall

  • Rounded edges

  • Full casing

  • For products requiring ventilation, there are usually smaller perforation holes

These features help to prevent users from being able to attach ligatures that could allow them to hurt themselves or others.
