London Law Firm Changing Room Refurbishment - Cycle to Work Case Study

As with many businesses in central London, a growing number of employees are taking to cycling into work. With the numbers of cyclists swelling, offices and firms are looking to provide better changing and shower facilities for their staff.

At a leading London law firm, one of their basement meeting rooms was given to the project, with the objective of creating a completely separate space in which to keep cycling jerseys, shoes and helmets away from the executive workspace.

After some initial layout suggestions and CAD drawings, the client approved a design that met their needs and our team set to work. The development began with stripping the existing basement space back and removing the waste by a wait and load skip service that we use when working in the city.

A new suspended ceiling was fitted, which housed all the mains services and cabling, as well as an LED lighting system. After constructing some new stud-work, all the walls were clad in Altro Whiterock. As well as being completely waterproof, this material comes with a long warranty and is one of the most hygienic and easy to clean wall surfaces available.

Altro Aquarius vinyl flooring was laid, which is durable, watertight and boasts non-slip safety properties. Beneath this, we had laid a wetroom floor former, so that all the levels would fall towards a dedicated floor drain. We created three showers in total, using Bristan thermostatic exposed feed showers.

The client wanted the new showering space to not only look slick but to also stand the test of time. To protect against water damage and damp, we installed Altro hygienic door sets, both for the wash space and for a nearby electrical cupboard.

An existing toilet was replaced and improved upon by fitting a half-height duct set behind a back to wall toilet. This kept the cistern, mains feeds and waste pipe concealed and out of view, but also made the room easier to clean. This half-height duct set carried a Corian solid surface shelf above it to match a semi-recessed Corian vanity unit and washbasin.

Finally, a nest of Sold Grade Laminate lockers was installed to house cycling shoes, clothing, and personal items, while a new bespoke cloakroom was fitted out, to serve guests when functions and events take place in a nearby meeting room.

Property in central London almost always comes with difficult or constrained spaces. As well as dealing with basement drainage and ventilation, we managed to deliver a dynamic wash space which has not only given employees somewhere to freshen up before work but maintained a division between the professional workspace and storage of personal items and cycling paraphernalia.  A final word from the client:

"Very pleased with the shower room project, good quality, nice people, professional and finished on time."
