Central London Post COVID Washroom Refurbishment - Case Study

The fallout from the coronavirus pandemic has seen businesses across multiple sectors shut their doors and furlough staff. However, we’ve seen several savvy organisations use this as an opportunity to upgrade their sites with improved hygiene and safety protocols in place to ensure staff can return to work in a safe environment.

This business in central London near the Bank of England had the foresight to refurbish two male, two female and two disabled washrooms while their staff were either furloughed or working from home. The washrooms in question were in need of modernisation and looking quite tired.

After stripping out the existing rooms, we installed an Altro Walkway vinyl safety flooring, a material that has strong anti-slip and easy-clean properties. The flooring is coved up the sides of the walls to create a watertight tray to facilitate sanitisation.

The walls were then clad in Altro Whiterock, a renowned hygienic wall cladding material that has strong hygiene properties and a powerful 10-year warranty. The material reduces join lines by being thermoformed around the corners and connected where necessary with secure H-trims.

Reducing the spread of bacteria was key to this washroom design where contact points were kept at a minimum. This was delivered through sensor-activated PIR lighting which removes the need for a light switch, sensor-activated flush controls to both urinals and toilets, DVS A45 sensor taps, and touch-free hand dryers. These installations meant that users had to touch far fewer surfaces when using the washrooms, making it safer and easier to clean.

To complement these features, we installed Corian solid surface wash troughs with solid grade laminate underframes. This removed the problem of sitting water on vanity tops, but also meant that washbasin waste was handled by a single outlet. Above the hand wash area were box mounted mirrors that could be lifted to reveal discreet storage for cleaning supplies.

All the cubicles were made from solid grade laminate (SGL), a material completely impervious to water and has anti-microbial properties impregnated into the surface. IPS panel systems were also integrated, meaning all the mains water and waste services, as well as cisterns, could be concealed within a DUCT set or false wall. These were then clad with SGL panels to further maintain the easy clean nature of the washrooms.

Wall hung toilet pans were used, which not only keeps the floor clear to deliver a more open feel to the washroom but makes floor cleaning and pan cleaning much swifter and easier.  Our stainless steel IPS duct frame was used to ensure the wall hung pan was safely and secured to the building's masonry walls.

The two disabled washrooms also carried Altro Whiterock on the walls and Altro Walkway anti-slip vinyl flooring. Full Doc-M packs were used inside the rooms, delivering the grab rails, washbasin, raised toilet pan and lever tap controls needed to comply with Document-M or Building Regulations.

The result of this dynamic washrooms refurbishment program meant that staff were able to return to the workplace with confidence. The business invested in employee safety, while simultaneously improving the corporate working environment exponentially.
