Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club Refurbishment Project - Case Study

Having previously carried out washroom refurbishment works for the Camping and Caravanning Club, we were delighted to take on this extensive project at their site in Chertsey, which involved two sets of female and male changing and shower rooms, staff showering and toilet facilities, family room amenities, disabled wash and shower rooms, two dishwashing and utility rooms, a dog wash, and significant exterior alterations.

This six-month project was centred around two main buildings, a reception block, and what the client refers to as the 'Amenity Building'. Both buildings were in need of significant updating and required extensive structural changes.

Refurbishing The Reception Building

As well as being home to the site’s main reception, this building also has a disabled washroom, as well as male and female toilet and shower facilities. The building had to be stripped back to its core structure before works could begin.

As part of the remodelling work we constructed two new canopy entrance porches, as well as a covered canopy over the front of the reception area.

New tarmac was laid at the entrance to the reception building, in addition to a new disabled ramp, aluminium windows and doors and a cut timber cladding to the right of the main entrance. The Reception building also needed a new tiled roof which we carried out, complete with bespoke glass canopy windows above the washrooms.

The reception room itself had an anti-slip vinyl safety flooring fitted. We also built a bespoke reception desk and area, delivering a very modern and clean aesthetic to the centres booking in facilities.

Transforming The Reception Building Washroom Facilities

Internally, we brought in the most durable and easy clean materials to provide Chertsey Camping and Caravanning club with facilities that will stand the test of time. A Dorset Wooliscroft floor tile was laid throughout, while Altro Whiterock was used to clad the walls.

Toilet cubicles were constructed from solid grade laminate (SGL), a highly durable material that’s completely impervious to water.

All the falls on the floor were reset for the showering enclosures, where RADA shower panels were installed with cubicles made from SGL. Between the male and female units, a caretaker's cupboard allows access to both washrooms and was fitted with storage and a butler sink and bib taps for easy access and disposal of cleaning supplies.

The floor in the disabled washroom was also reset to create a wetroom environment. Fitted with a full Doc-M pack, this toilet and shower room contained all the relevant items to make it compliant with Document-M of Building Regulations, including grab rails, raised height toilet pan, outward opening door, and lever operated water controls.

The Amenity Building Facilities Refurbishment

As we had to dig out the entire floor to rearrange and bring in new drainage, this opportunity was used to install structural steels in order to create a partition wall in both male and female changing rooms. After a new sub-floor and screed was laid, these rooms were then floored with matching Dorset Wooliscroft tile and matching skirting.

The partition wall was fitted with wash basin facilities on one side and a mirror and vanity shelf on the other, complete with hair dryers and a wall mounted mirror. SGL was used to create custom cubicles which were allocated for toilets and showers, as well as private hand wash basins for shaving.

In the male washrooms, urinals were mounted to an IPS DUCT set. This created a thin false wall in which the mains water waste pipes and cistern could be housed.

This space also required a new bespoke atrium window module on the roof, and the building was equipped with a new suspended ceiling which was plasterboarded and skim finished.

The ceiling now housed the new ventilation and extraction systems, as well as new electrics and a LED lighting set-up. This low energy lighting was activated by PIR lighting sensors in the room so that the lights are only activated when a user is in the washroom, automatically switching off after a set period of time.

Refurbishing The Family Washroom

Within this block was a family washroom, a private space with showering, toilet and hand wash facilities. The floors were again reset here to allow for a wetroom environment. This allows the water to drain effectively into a floor drain.

As well as fitting all the requisite sanitary ware, we created a bespoke baby bath in the vanity unit as well as a drop-down baby changer and a security seat for toddlers so that parents can use the other facilities safe in the knowledge that their child can’t hurt themselves.

Refurbishing The Internal Laundry Room & Dish Washing Areas

The internal laundry room suffered from disabled access issues, so we widened all the doorways, requiring new lintels above each. This allowed wheelchair users to gain entry and access the facilities.

To further aid this usability, we also had custom sinks fitted which have a lower height and allow you to tuck the knees and chair of a user underneath. It was also a point of the design to make sure there were low level washing machines and dryers, as well as those stacked for space saving convenience.

Designing and Fitting a Dog Washing Room

In the Amenity Building was an old boiler cupboard which was ample enough to fit in a dog washing unit. This unit was at a raised level to allow dog owners easy control of washing their dogs without bending forward and injuring their back.

The unit is of a trough-like design, where dogs can be hosed down without creating a lot of mess. There is also a raised level inside for smaller dogs.

Additional Refurbishment Phases

As part of this project, we also converted a garage into staff showers and toilet facilities. This required the construction of stud work and rerouting of waste pipes and mains water services. We also carried out some refurbishments to the staff bungalow on site.

The End Result

This project for Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club has improved not just the aesthetics of the reception and amenity buildings, but transformed the usability and functionality of the washroom provisions across the entire site.
