Which products should I use to clean my Stainless Steel washroom dispensers?

To ensure your stainless steel soap dispensers, toilet roll dispensers, and paper towel dispensers remain unblemished it is important that the correct cleaning procedures are followed.

Although stainless steel does not rust or corrode, it can become tarnished (which some mistake as rust) if scratched or damaged and is as susceptible to dust, grime, and general dirt as other materials. This discolouring or tarnishing is often mistaken for rust, but with correct maintenance, this can be avoided.

Recommended cleaning instructions

The simplest and safest option when carrying out a routine clean of stainless steel is water and a microfibre cloth. Clean along the polish lines of the steel (i.e. clean with/along the grain) as opposed to scrubbing, and rinse and dry the item afterward to ensure water spots do not develop on the surface (these occur more commonly with hard water).

If the water is dirty or contains grit it may leave residue on the item which reinforces the importance of a thorough rinse and dry.

If water is not sufficient to clean your item then you can try a cleaner designed specifically for stainless steel. These will clean the steel and help remove the appearance of any scratches when used correctly and leave the steel looking great. Always read the instructions on any cleaning product prior to use to minimise the chance of damage via misuse.

WD40 is also suggested as a suitable cleaning product by many manufacturers, though it is of course down to the discretion of whoever cleans and maintains the items.

Cleaning Materials to avoid

In terms of what not to use when cleaning your stainless steel, it is very important not to use any cleaners containing bleach as the chlorine will react badly with the stainless steel. Equally, any abrasive cloths, steel wool or steel brushes could cause scratching (which is not always visible, particularly with satin finish stainless steel) which in turn can lead to surface blemishes.

If a bleach or chlorine-based cleaner is used mistakenly then you must thoroughly rinse and dry the item as quickly as you can.
